The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews (many hold this one to be Apollos) presents a new and expanded picture of what it means to enter the rest of the Lord. In 4.14-16 we read: Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. We could not be better off than to serve the one and only heavenly High Priest—Jesus!
Because he is the Incarnate Son of God and our Redeemer Jesus is totally familiar with every aspect of what it means to be human, and everything required for us to be turned to God: For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, The sympathy exercised by the Lord on our behalf is not a ‘poor baby’ application, but of empathy with our situation as one of having the solution.
Jesus has experienced everything that has ever been a part of our lives except that it was never his nature to submit to sin: but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. We can always look to our Lord when we are faced with temptation because he knows what it will take to get us through it and into his rest. What a delight to know that we know that we know HE WINS!
We are not to fear coming into the presence of our Lord High God with anything but victory in mind: Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. When we enter the Lord’s rest we will discover just how powerful is the grace and mercy of God on our behalf. It is God’s desire—and our own—that we spend all of life resting in God.
