The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews (many hold this one to be Apollos) presents a new and expanded picture of what it means to enter the rest of the Lord. In 4.11-13 we read: Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience. It is well worth every effort we might offer to enter into the rest of our Lord rather than to just submit to ourselves.
Once again, it is imperative that we come to an understanding that the rest of our Lord has nothing whatsoever to do with lounging around in life. The word of God calls for us to exercise every muscle we have in order to enter into his call as faithful servants. God never wastes words: For the word of God is living and active. His is not a call given eons ago with the hope that some would come. It is alive TODAY!
Precision is the definition of our God’s call: Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. We cannot escape his power present within us, in every aspect of our being, and for the purpose of bringing us to an awareness of our true relationship with our Lord Jesus. Let’s not imagine we can hide from our Lord.
It is the desire of God’s heart that we will fall before him in faith as he makes us aware of his love, grace, and mercy and at the same time our own unworthiness: Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Doesn’t it seem to make a great deal of sense to come into the rest of God TODAY! Let us rest in his rest!
